What is FlutterInit?
Starting a serious Flutter project means making a dozen decisions before you write a line of feature code — architecture, state management, routing, backend, theming, logging, localisation — and then wiring all of them together correctly. The usual shortcut is cloning someone’s boilerplate, which means inheriting their dozen decisions and deleting the parts that do not match yours.
FlutterInit turns that into a configuration form. You open the dashboard, name the project, pick from each category, and it generates the project as a downloadable zip:
- Architecture: Clean Architecture, MVVM, Feature-First
- State management: Riverpod, Bloc/Cubit, Provider, GetX, Signals
- Backend: Firebase, Supabase, Appwrite, Hive, SharedPreferences, or none
- Navigation: go_router, auto_route, or none
- Networking: Dio with interceptors, or plain http, plus cached_network_image
- Design: Material 3, dark mode, ScreenUtil, Flutter Animate, Skeletonizer, native splash
- Extras: easy_localization, logger, dotenv, permissions, pickers, share_plus, geolocator
Under the hood it is a Next.js app driving Handlebars templates, which is why the combinations compose instead of coming from one frozen repo per stack.
Why it matters in 2026
Two things make this more interesting than the average project generator.
The first is that it is web-first. There is nothing to install and nothing to keep up to date — the template engine is always the current one, because it lives on the server. The create-flutterinit npm package exists for people who prefer a terminal, but the browser is the primary interface.
The second is the AI context files. Every generated project ships CLAUDE.md, AGENTS.md and .cursor/rules/flutter-project.mdc, written for the exact stack you chose. The generated project needs Flutter ^3.5.0. Nothing else.
Contributors who want to run the engine locally need Node 20+ or Bun 1.1+, then bun install and bun run dev on http://localhost:3000.
When should you use FlutterInit?
- you are starting a new project and want the standard wiring done correctly rather than quickly
- you keep re-creating the same Clean Architecture + Riverpod + go_router skeleton by hand
- you want to compare two stacks by generating both and reading the diff
- you plan to hand the codebase to an AI agent and want it to have real context on day one
Where it falls short
A generator is a starting point, not a dependency. Once you download the zip you own everything in it — there is no upgrade path when FlutterInit’s templates improve, and no way to re-run it against a project you have already customised. That is the honest trade for having no runtime coupling.
The repository has some rough edges. GitHub’s licence detection does not classify the repo, even though the README carries an MIT badge linking to a LICENSE file — worth checking yourself before shipping generated code in a commercial product, though the generated output is your own project either way. The README also has visible leftovers from an unresolved merge (a stray add_cli branch marker around the blog links), which tells you something about the review process on a project this young.
Finally, the opinionated part is genuinely opinionated. If your team’s architecture does not resemble Clean, MVVM or Feature-First, you are fighting the template rather than using it.
